The Consumer Investigation Unit (CIU) Assistant Investigator is an entry-level investigator position. You will conduct investigations into allegations of violations of Alberta’s Consumer Protection Legislation, obtain evidence for purpose of seeking the truth, and taking appropriate enforcement action. Investigations assigned directly to you will generally be a lower level of complexity. You may also work in a team led by more senior investigators who are conducting complex investigations completing assigned investigative tasks.
The successful candidate will require:
- Ability to complete Alberta Peace Officer Investigator training and be eligible to obtain a Peace Officer appointment.
- Ability to learn Alberta’s Consumer Protection legislation, apply this knowledge to conducting investigations and enforcing this legislation.
- Knowledge of the Criminal Code and ability to enforce specific criminal code sections in the area of fraud and theft as some investigations may also involve allegations of criminal activity.
- Knowledge and training in conducting investigations, gathering evidence, service of legal documents and report writing.
- Excellent listening, written and verbal communications skills. Investigators are required to promote a fair market place by providing information to the public and business community. Investigators will also be required to provide testimony in Court or Administrative Enforcement Appeal Hearings.
- The ability to work well within a team, with the public, businesses, industry associations and other law enforcement agencies
The successful candidate is expected to have:
- Excellent organizational, time management skills and ability to pay attention to details and communicate details both in writing and verbally.
- Excellent negotiation, judgement, conflict resolution and mediation skills
- Good knowledge of Microsoft Suite program and functions including word, outlook and excel.
- Ability to learn computer applications such as corporate registry, motor vehicle records and others for data base searches, CIU records management system.
Qualifications
University graduation in a related field; no experience required; or equivalent as described below.
Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:
- 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
- 1 year of experience for 1 year of education
The following will be considered as asset:
- Experience in enforcement, regulatory or protection background

Salary
$2,281.95 to $2,993.39 bi-weekly ($59,558 - $ 78,127/year)
