The Community Navigation and Physician Retention Services Association (a partnership of the Town of Antigonish, Municipality of the County of Antigonish and the St. Martha’s Regional Hospital Foundation) is seeking a community navigator to support physician integration and retention in the Antigonish community.

Community Navigator

The Navigator will liaise between physicians, Nova Scotia Health (NSH) and community partners to share the deep sense of community pride that exists in Antigonish. The navigator will work in collaboration with the local Nova Scotia Health physician recruiter to act as a community resource for prospective and new physicians. The Navigator is the local expert and provides a clear and direct connection to the community and its resources.

Reporting to the Association’s Board of Directors, the Navigator is responsible for the financial stewardship and accountability of the organization.

Areas of responsibility include: The successful candidate will be a key player in the successful integration and retention of the local physician workforce, supporting physicians and their families as they make the transition to the community of Antigonish. The navigator will engage with physicians and the community in developing and delivering an integration and retention strategy. This includes working with the existing physician workforce at St. Martha’s to help foster a sense of community—supporting retention-based activities and regular communication. The community navigator must demonstrate flexibility and innovation in supporting and assisting newly recruited physicians and their families in accessing services, programs, and/or resources within the community including supporting the organization of personalized community tours, to include schools, housing, activities, library, etc., as requested by the recruit and in partnership with NSH physician recruiter.

The community navigator will maintain a network of community leaders, contacts and resources that can support physician and family integration and retention initiatives. Knowledge of the communities within Antigonish County are vital.

Qualifications/Skills:

  • The successful candidate will have an extensive knowledge of the community, region and its amenities, strengths, and all it has to offer, as well as local economic, social and professional networks.
  • The Association is seeking a candidate that exhibits a high energy level, and demonstrates the ability to work as a team, with flexibility in work habits to schedule and meet the needs of physicians and funding partners.
  • The successful candidate will have the ability to build strong relationships with physicians, as well as the local community. A successful candidate will have a collaborative nature and be able to balance the job requirements while considering multiple stakeholders. They will also have a proven ability to work independently, demonstrate creativity and resourcefulness.
  • The successful candidate will have a University degree and a minimum of three years of relevant and/or related experience. The successful candidate will have superior interpersonal, communication (both oral and written), and organizational skills, and have demonstrated sound judgment and decision-making skills.
  • The successful candidate must demonstrate innovation in operational planning, implementation and evaluation, as well as demonstrated financial management experience and experience developing proposals and funding applications.

This is a 3-year contract with the possibility of extension. Candidate must have a valid driver's license and access to a reliable car for travel for work

Hours of Work: 75 hours biweekly. Shifts may include days, evenings and weekends. Travel to various locations across the County may be required.
