Reporting to the Vice President Strategy and Engagement, the Director of Corporate Communications is responsible for the development and implementation of NSP’s corporate communications strategy, aligning goals and objectives with the company’s vision, values, and strategies.
The Director of Corporate Communications is accountable for managing external and internal communications with the goal of sharing NSP’s brand story with customers, employees, and key stakeholders, while increasing the broader profile and reputation for the organization.
Accountabilities:
Communications Strategy and Leadership
- Lead and manage a team to support the development and implementation of NS Power’s corporate communications strategy with the goal of increasing the visibility and understanding of NS Power’s strategic initiatives with key stakeholders.
- Provide leadership, expertise, and planning in all areas of corporate communications (internal and external) for, and in collaboration with management, subject matter experts and external partners.
- Identify challenges and emerging issues faced by the organization. Work with the Leadership team and internal teams to recognize internal and external communications’ opportunities and define and execute appropriate strategies to support them.
- Cultivate and enhance meaningful relationships with external partners and key stakeholders.
- Provide communications support to NSP’s government relations, regulatory and operations teams.
- Establish and monitor staff performance and development goals, assign accountabilities, set objectives, establish priorities, and conduct annual performance appraisals.
- Promote a culture of high performance and continuous improvement that values learning and a commitment to quality.
Communications Operations
- Oversee strategy and planning for both proactive communications and issues/incident management.
- Oversee all aspects of media relations including management of senior communications advisor/spokesperson. Act as spokesperson when required.
- Develop and implement internal communication strategy and plans that facilitate employee engagement, retention, and recruitment.
- Prepare key messages, speeches, presentations, and other supporting material as required.
- Introduce best practices and refine existing processes and procedures that expand the capacity of the Corporate Communications department to proactively meet the communications-related demands of NSP’s corporate strategy programs, councils and working groups.
- Oversee the day-to-day activities of the communications department including budgeting, planning, and reporting.
- Maintain current and establish new measurement metrics and benchmarks for corporate communications.
You will be responsible for personal safety and that of co-workers by observing and ensuring compliance with all Occupational Health and Safety Rules and Regulations.
Skills, Capabilities and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications/public relations, or related field is required. An advanced degree is preferred.
- Minimum of 10 years progressive experience with 7 years experience in a management role in communications. A communications role held in either a federal or provincial political environment or regulated entity will be considered an asset.
- Demonstrated experience and leadership in managing a comprehensive communications plan, media relations, and employee communications to advance an organization's mission and goals.
- Innovative thinker, with a track record for translating strategic thinking into action plans and output.
- Demonstrated skill, experience, and comfort in media relations.
- Extensive writing and editing experience with a variety of print and online communications media.
- The ability to form effective, consultative working relationships with colleagues at all levels and external stakeholders.
- Experience in mentoring and coaching a team of communications specialists.
- Energetic, self-reliant, good problem solver and results oriented.
- Exceptional written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills and the ability to effectively interface with senior management.
- Comfortable working under pressure and meeting deadlines, exceptional prioritization, and organizational skills.
Available for on-call and after hours work on projects and issues management. The Director, Corporate Communications plays a hands-on role during storm restoration and must be available to work during storms.
