English Language Learner Educator
This posting will be used to fill 20 vacancies. All postions are temporary ending June 30th, 2023. The English Language Learner Educators ( ELLEs), under the direction of the manager and supervision of the respective principal, provide a range of educational support services to identified English Language Learners (ELL). The primary focus of the job is working directly with children and teachers to provide support for a range of needs that impact classroom and academic functioning, differentiating for students whose first language is not English.
The work requires the incumbent to be familiar with a range of technology supports to provide Universal Design for Learning strategies in the classroom. To perform the work, the incumbent must be fluent in written and spoken English. Succesful candidate will work within the classroom environment with a team, consisting of teachers, administrators, ELL designates, Learning Coaches, consultants, parents, staff and multi-disciplinary team (MDT) members.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
- Plan and implement programs/strategies with specific students or groups of students, as identified by ELL benchmarks
- Plan and implement scaffolded instructional plans and activities in the classroom that support the language development of English Language Learner
- Develop materials and activities to scaffold learning
- Provide support to families by assisting with home program preparation and modeling
- Incorporate games, formal exercises, and literature into classroom instruction
- Modify instructional material, considering age and benchmark level of students
- Provide small group classroom instruction to support the teacher in curriculum delivery
- Support English Language Learners in completing lessons, assignments, projects or activities
- Tutor and work with students to improve language skills and overall learning
- Build positive relationships with students by providing meaningful and current instruction
- Provide students with clear expectations and feedback in their language development
- Assist in administering informal/formal screening tools to determine language benchmarks
- Model/discuss strategies and supports as appropriate with the classroom team and manager and ESL consultants
- Collaborate with educational teams to discuss student work, share best practices, and support student mastery of standards
QUALIFICATIONS
- Diploma in an area related to child development, education, or foreign language education, plus three years of related experience
- Fluency in English, both written and oral, is essential
- Fluency in an additional language an asset (Tagalog, Malayalam, Amharic, Vietnamese, Spanish, and Tigrinya, in particular).
- Knowledge of language programming within Alberta Education System
- Understanding of the provincial curriculum, ESL Benchmarking, and language acquisition strategies
- Strong teamwork skills with the ability to work in partnership with the teacher to plan and implement instructional activities
- Strong organizational skills are required to coordinate the many aspects of the work
- Strong planning, problem-solving and analytical skills
- Ability to build and maintain rapport and trust with students
