ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY

Based at the Detour Lake Mine site, we currently have an exciting opportunity for an Environmental Monitor to join our Environment and Sustainability team reporting to the Environmental Supervisor.


Detour Lake is the second largest gold producing mine in Canada with the largest gold reserves and substantial growth potential. The open pit mine is located in northeastern Ontario, approximately 300 kilometres northeast of Timmins and 185 kilometres by road northeast of Cochrane, within the northernmost Abitibi Greenstone Belt. The mine is situated in the area of the historic Detour Lake open pit/underground mine operated by Placer Dome which produced 1.8 million ounces of gold from 1983 to 1999. The Detour Lake operation has a mine life of approximately 22 years with an average gold production of 659,000 ounces per year.


The Environmental Monitor will be responsible for day-to-day field sampling, data collection and other monitoring activities as part of the site environmental management system. This is primarily a field-based role with requirements for daily field activities.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Conduct surface and groundwater sampling at various locations throughout the mine site
  • Prepare laboratory bottle sets, chains of custody and associated shipping information
  • Collect soil and air quality samples, and other environmental monitoring requirements as needed
  • Maintain and calibrate various field meters and other instrumentation
  • Operate various recreational vehicles to access field sample locations (snowmobile, argos, watercraft)
  • Manage field sample supplies and associated equipment
  • Conduct data entry for various field sampling programs
  • Participate in management of site wildlife and assist in the delivery of wildlife awareness programs
  • Promote site awareness of environmental requirements and conditions for operations
  • Provide support and advice to employees and Business Partners at the Detour Lake Mine for environmental aspects for work plans
  • Provide regular updates to the community in the form of a written end of shift report
  • Attend community-based meetings as necessary
  • Participate in site inspections to ensure compliance with environmental policies and procedures

QUALIFICATIONS

Our ideal candidate has:

  • Grade 12 diploma or equivalency
  • College Diploma or other post-secondary education in an environmental or related discipline is an asset
  • Valid Ontario’s Driver License
  • Firearms Possession and Acquisition License is an asset
  • Knowledge of wildlife management
  • Basic knowledge of the MS Office Suite
  • Knowledge of surveying techniques
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety on industrial sites
  • Mechanical aptitude
  • Experience operating field vehicles (pick-up and trailer, ATV, argo, snowmobile)
  • Experience collecting field samples (water, air, soil, noise) is an asset
  • Experience working outside in varying weather conditions
  • Ability to complete tasks which are physically demanding
