We are providing an exciting career opportunity for an HR Generalist to facilitate human resource functions at 3 of our smaller Canadian C&I Plants located in Unity, Saskatchewan; Wynyard, Saskatchewan; and Amherst, Nova Scotia. The successful candidate can be based out any of these three sites and will travel to the other 2 sites every 8 weeks for a short team support visit.
The HR Generalist, alongside site Leadership Teams, will be responsible for daily facilitation of policies and programs covering several or all of the following: recruiting, benefits, training, employee relations, document control, and HCM database maintenance, while promoting Compass Minerals’ vision, mission and core values. In addition, the HR Generalist will be supportively partnered with the Human Resource Business Partners and HR Leadership Team in order to effectively deliver HR strategies, objectives, programs, projects and initiatives.
Travel Requirements: 10-25% travel will be required.
How will you contribute to the team?
- Route requisitions for approval, post and track open positions.
- Manage full cycle recruiting process to meet the various staffing goals across all levels within multiple business units. i.e job requisitions, job descriptions, job postings, candidate interviewing, drafting of offer letters, conducting background checks, and prepare new hire orientation paperwork.
- Manage the on-going processes related to the employment life-cycle; employee management, mentoring, coaching, discipline and professional advancement.
General Administration:
- Develop, plan and help administer new processes and HR department project initiatives by partnering with HR Business Partners.
- Support the intern program initiatives, program details and success metrics.
- Analyze success of HR programs including; intern program, new hire orientation, and program systems.
- Facilitate monthly onboarding of new employees by organizing agenda, topics covered and coordination of speakers.
- Update new employee data, change requests into HCM system; maintain HCM and applicant databases.
- Update and print routine database reports or create new requests as needed. Enter transactions into Taleo and HCM systems, including new hires, employee maintenance, transfers, terminations, etc.
- Respond to employee questions and concerns regarding employee information, policies and procedures and document retrieval while developing positive relationships with our customers.
- Assist with performance management, payroll inquiries; provide administrative support; ensure compliance with company’s values, policies and procedures.
- Support the HRBP with administration of training, i.e. compliance, benefits, wellness programs, PDP process, etc.
- Ensure changes are processed in HCM/Payroll and documentation is correctly filed in employee file. Maintain legal compliance by archiving certain employee documents in separate file cabinets.
- Prepare and distribute multiple merit spreadsheets.
- Attend and contribute to a variety of HR meetings: benefits, HCM, new hire orientation, various communication meetings, etc.
- Create reports on HR related metrics (Labour, Attendance, New Hire, etc...).
Assisting Benefits Administration within the H.R. Team:
- Tracking for new enrollments/terms/changes.
- Respond to employee inquiries and requests for information.
- Administrative support for Educational Assistance claim forms and processing.
- Participate in wellbeing strategy meetings.
- Coordinate annual data collection of Merit Ratings, AIP.
- Assist with Data Integrity.
- Complete necessary forms for updating system of record for terminations, LOA and special bonuses.
What you bring:
- Requires a bachelor’s degree or equivalent education. Candidates with 3-4 years working experience as an H.R. Generalist or H.R. Coordinator will also be considered.

- Monday-Friday.
- Ability to remotely support multi-sites across three time zones.
- If you do not live nearby either C&I Plants, you will be required to relocate. Relocation package available to those that qualify.
About the Locations you will be supporting:
The Amherst Plant is located in a fully established community of 10,000, situated on the Nova Scotia/New Brunswick border on the northeast end of the Cumberland Basin, an arm of the Bay of Fundy. Amherst is two hours from Halifax and less than an hour’s drive from Moncton, NB. The plant employs 50 and has an annual capacity of 127,000 tons of food grade and water-softening salt, serving customers throughout the Maritimes, Quebec and the Eastern United States.
The Unity Evaporation Plant is located in a friendly community of 2,500 that loves hockey and curling, situated in the beautiful big-sky prairies, an hour from North Battleford and a 2 hour drive from Saskatoon. We’re proud to be one of Unity’s steadfast employers, currently employing 55-60 people. Annually, we produce 135,000 tons of food grade, water conditioning and agricultural salt, serving our customers throughout Western Canada.
The Wynyard Plant is located right on Big Quill Lake, in a friendly community of 1,800, situated 50 minutes from the city of Humboldt and a 2 hour drive from Saskatoon. Our Wynyard Plant is Canada’s largest producer of sulfate of potash (SOP), currently employing 34 people, with an annual production of 37,000 metric tonnes of SOP. Our product is used in pharmaceuticals, specialized agricultural fertilizer, animal food and in various industrial applications, serving our customers throughout North America, South America, Europe, and regions of Asia.
