Position
Summary

This position, reporting to the Operations Supervisor, will be responsible for carrying out maintenance on municipal roads, sidewalks, parks, municipal lots and infrastructure. Working as part of a team, common tasks include lawn care, sign maintenance, road patching, garbage removal, sports field maintenance, and general cleaning in addition to operating various small engine and light and medium equipment. As a member of the Operations team, the Labourer will work in an outdoor team environment to contribute to meeting departmental goals and objectives and will do so through all weather conditions. As a municipal employee, responding to resident inquiries is a shared responsibility for all Town employees. Some evenings and weekends may be required.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform maintenance with regards to roads, winter operations (seasonally), patching, tar & chip repairs, inspections, litter and leaf pickup, culverts, catch basins, storm sewers, buildings, fencing, painting, and general concrete and carpentry.
  • Engage in a variety of park maintenance duties such as lawn and turf care, tree trimming/clearing/removal, public restroom cleaning, weed control, beach or playground grooming and inspections, sports fields and trails maintenance.
  • Operate light and medium equipment such as loader (with attachment), trackless with various attachments, one-ton truck, skid steer, riding mowers, trailers, small engine equipment and hand tools.
  • Complete traffic plans, circle checks, and any other required documentation.
  • Work as a team member in a maintenance operation which often includes independent work.
  • Provide quality customer service and respond to public inquiries where required.
  • Document and report hazardous conditions. Work in compliance with the Occupational Health & Safety Act, WHMIS, applicable legislations, regulations and departmental polices/procedures/practices and operational guidelines and perform safe work practices.
  • Perform other general municipal maintenance duties as may be assigned in accordance with departmental and corporate objectives.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Minimum Grade 12 or equivalent training & experience.
  • Valid Class “G” driver’s license, with updated medical and drivers abstract.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of relevant experience preferably in the maintenance, construction, parks, or municipal fields while operating light or medium equipment.
  • General aptitude and proficiencies in operating vehicles and mechanized equipment.
  • Proven ability to work independently or as a team member.
  • Excellent time management, interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Good knowledge of road maintenance and operations, traffic control procedures, equipment maintenance and operation and MOE & MTO regulations/guidelines an asset.
  • “DZ” license or Certified Parks Technician (CPT) considered an asset.
  • Civil construction experience including sanitary and storm sewer experience considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of minimum maintenance standards considered an asset.
  • Available for emergency, on-call, and after-hours response where needed.
  • Conscientious, with attitude and manner to serve and support the public.
  • Must be physically capable of performing required duties as described above.
  • Successful candidates will be orientated on the Town of Midland’s Health & Safety policies.
  • Approved safety boots and PPE must be worn at all times.
  • Ability to work varying shifts depending on the time of year and the needs of the business.
  • Shall disclose proof of COVID-19 vaccination status.

Effort/Physical Demands

  • Physical demand requires potentially long periods of standing, sitting, walking, pushing, pulling, crouching, kneeling, or lifting.
  • Visual attention for health and safety compliance and personal safety while on the job.

Working Conditions

  • Work in extreme outside conditions (heat/cold).
  • May be required to work occasional evenings, weekends, and special events.
  • Frequently work near moving mechanical equipment, vehicles, and parts.
  • Working forty (40) hours per week, number of days per week may vary.
