Position Summary
The Learning Centre Coordinator is a vital member of the Practical Nursing (PN) program team responsible for contributing to the operations of the Health Labs in Port Alberni and Campbell River campuses by advancing simulation-based curriculum and faculty development, designing and implementing teaching/learning strategies in collaboration with program faculty and overseeing the general operations of the Health Labs.

This position also acts as a consultant to other North Island College health programs who wish to further develop their simulation capacity and works collaboratively with other health program faculty in the development and implementation of intra and Interprofessional simulations. This position is also responsible for the monitoring, ordering, and maintenance of supplies for the PN program at various campuses.

Note: because the Health Care Assistant (HCA) program uses the Campbell River, Comox Valley St. Joe’s, and Port Alberni Health Labs the starred (*) activities below will be done by the PN Learning Center Coordinator on behalf of both programs.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Collaborates with the PN department faculty to maintain a safe, operational, and learner-friendly environment in the Health Labs.
  • Collaborates with the PN department faculty to develop and coordinate “best informed practice” experiential learning activities and course materials in keeping with the provincial PN curriculum blueprint.
  • Provides ongoing mentorship, support, and guidance to faculty in using simulation learning technologies.
  • Participates in faculty development and mentoring related to current and emerging simulation education strategies.
  • Ensures faculty orientation to the Health Lab operations and equipment.
  • Provides support to faculty in developing Health Lab experiences.
  • Creates simulation activities and events across the PN department and works with faculty and Learning Centre Coordinators across the Faculty for interdepartmental simulation and events.
  • When time permits, conducts timely remedial skill acquisition activities in consultation with course instructors and/or student self-referral.
  • Assesses suitability of new equipment through research, on-site testing, and off-site evaluations of equipment used at other centres. (*)
  • Meets with equipment suppliers to discuss and evaluate new equipment as it comes to market. (*)
  • Coordinates purchase, receiving, and cataloguing of supplies necessary for the day-to-day operations of the Health Labs. (*)
  • Organizes in-servicing of equipment ands technology across the Health Labs. (*)
  • Maintains the inventory of a broad range of resource materials and supplies including inventory databases for the Health Labs. (*)
  • Collaborates with PN Department Chair on Health Lab supplies budgets and monitors expenditures to be within budget. (*)
  • Coordinates equipment utilization, maintenance, and purchasing of supplies necessary for the day-to-day operations of the Health Labs. (*)
  • Projects future needs in consultation with faculty and Department Chair to support the Capital budget process for the Health Labs. (*)
  • Develops and maintains policies, procedures, and practices governing the operation of the Health Labs
  • Maintains and makes available current documentation (policies, forms etc.) from practice agencies for students’ Health Lab experiences.
  • Contributes to PN program internal and external reporting requirements.
  • Collaborates with other divisional programs regarding planning, implementation, and evaluation of simulation technology in curricula.

Required Education & Experience
  • Meets minimum required qualifications and defined in the BC Practical Nursing Provincial Curriculum.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing is preferred.
  • Minimum of three years previous experience working in a Learning Resource Centre.
  • Extensive previous experience with simulation learning is required.
  • Current registration with BCCNM.

Required Knowledge Skills & Abilities
  • Current expertise and experience in one or more of the following practice areas: Acute Medicine, Acute Surgery, Community, Older Adult, Mental Health, and/or Women & Children.
  • Previous experience in managing a Learning Resource Center is an asset.
  • Experience teaching adults is required, preferably at the College level.
  • Demonstrated excellent instructional abilities, using creative and motivating approaches to stimulate learning.
  • Ability to demonstrate effective team behaviours, support cooperative and effective working relationships, and contribute to shared team goals.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to plan, prioritize, and efficiently meet deadlines.
  • Excellent oral, interpersonal, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently, display initiative, and apply effective analytical thinking to solve problems.
  • Ability to accept personal responsibility to ensure quality of work, attention to details and ongoing learning.
  • Experience with willingness to learn, online learning management systems, i.e.D2L Brightspace.
  • Proficiency in the use of computer applications, the internet, and with MS Office software applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams.
  • Valid BC driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle is required.
