About the Role

To provide engineering leadership and support for the control systems associated with gas turbines, refrigerant centrifugal compressors, pumps, expanders, and other rotating equipment as part of the LNG Canada Operations Technical Support team.

The Maintenance and Engineering team is responsible for ensuring all physical plant and equipment is reliable, compliant, well maintained and safe.

Will be part of the team to support production and manage LNG Canada processes and reliability improvement programs of the plant and equipment.

Core Accountabilities

This role will be responsible for the provision of control systems associated with rotating equipment engineering support to the LNGC Plant. Specific responsibilities include:


  • Ensure the Rotating equipment control system hardware/ software is installed per the appropriate design/standards.
  • Check that critical/complex Rotating equipment control, sequence and safeguarding systems are programmed in accordance with the design documents and project standards by working with the Contractor on testing of the applications during Commissioning.
  • Review and comment on various Contractor documents viz., Pre-commissioning and Commissioning procedures, function testing procedures, handover documents, updated design documents issued via MOC process.
  • Assist in MOC review activities (Alarm Reviews, SIL Classifications, HAZOPs)
  • Take part in commissioning and flawless start-up activities at the site
  • Carry-out field walkdown, participate in ITPs & ITRs for all compressor control devices.
  • Provide rotating equipment control systems support for operator training.
  • Liaise with main contractor representatives & equipment vendors to ensure that work delivered meets specifications.
  • Performing maintenance, modifications, adjustment, commissioning, testing and troubleshooting of software control system and equipment supporting gas turbines, compressors and other rotating equipment.
  • Acting as primary point of contact to the stakeholders for timely and satisfactory resolution of rotating equipment control systems concerns.
  • Collaborate with Commissioning team during Cause &Effect Tests, Control & Functional Tests - Auxiliary/Sub Systems and sign off as necessary. Provide engineering support to the commissioning team to ensure the required quality of commissioning.
  • Troubleshooting and diagnosis of rotating equipment control systems during start up, commissioning and operation, especially Aeroderivative Gas Turbines.
  • Organize and control diagnostic assessments and fault identification in Rotating equipment safety instrumented systems/monitoring systems. Take action to improve their reliability and efficiency.
  • Contributing to the scope of Shutdown and Major Maintenance activities.
  • Responsible for participating in or leading incident investigations.
  • Professional networking with the internal and external stakeholders and global Shell skill pool to represent Rotating Equipment discipline at internal and vendor meetings.
  • Mentoring and development of interns and graduate engineers.


People Management

  • Responsible for the allocation of resources (including sub-contractors) to ensure all department and business objectives are met.
  • Responsible for agreeing individual goals in line with the journey book for the business.
  • Responsible for agreeing upon individual development plans of the team members.

You will have expertise in:

  • Deep Rotating equipment control systems operations and maintenance experience, in particular GE Mark VIeS, safety systems, Bentley Nevada vibration monitoring systems, and Compressor Surge protection systems.
  • Experience as Field service engineer typically as Control systems engineer with one of the Gas Turbine manufacturers is preferred.
  • Experience with leading the management of rotating equipment control system assets and making critical technical decisions
  • Chartered Engineer accreditation is preferred but not essential.
  • Demonstrated experience with safety management systems and commitment to safety.
  • Experience with minor and major shutdown campaign preparation and execution and QA/QC process.
  • Experience of Troubleshooting, diagnostics, and analysis of rotating equipment leading to improvement of reliability and availability. Experience with Condition Monitoring systems (System 1 etc).
  • Input to long-term Functional Excellence strategy for the discipline

To be successful, you will have:

  • Bachelors in Control systems/Mechanical/Instrument engineering qualification and relevant experience, typically in operational engineering support role
  • Initiative and capacity to exercise good judgment
  • Good management and supervisory skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • High level interpersonal skills
  • Ability to collaborate with other core business areas to provide an engineering service that ensures asset integrity and longevity of plant & equipment
  • Significant experience in the operations, maintenance and troubleshooting of General Electric/Baker Hughes Aero derivative turbines.
  • Ideally spent time as Field Service Representative/technician with one of the Aeroderivative gas turbine Equipment Manufacturers is preferred.


This role requires that you:

  • Be legally entitled to work in Canada (i.e., by way of Canadian citizenship, permanent residency, or valid work permit)
  • Live in the beautiful District of Stikine (Kitimat/Terrace).   • Maintains a strong relationship & partnership with all organization technical and operational functions
  • This role will be based in Kitimat, BC
  • During Execute, Kitimat: 50 Hrs. per week, 10hr days AND during Operate or Steady state phase: 40 Hrs. per week.
  • Additional hours will be required during commissioning & start-up and during, turnaround to support execution.
  • Are willing to comply with LNGC’s drug-free and harassment-free work environment and comply with all safety policies and procedures.
  • Undergo a pre-placement medical assessment of your fitness for duty, and Pre-Site Access testing for alcohol and specified drugs.
