The cleanup of historic Low Level Radioactive Waste by CNL in the communities of Port Hope and Port Granby in Ontario is a demonstration of Canada’s commitment to the safe, long-term storage and management of nuclear waste.

THE POSITION
We are looking for several experienced Environmental Remediation Project Managers. Our Project Managers (PMs) are accountable for leading teams in the planning and delivery of large-scale, high-risk, projects of critical significance to the ongoing success of the Port Hope Area Initiative (PHAI) Program. Characterized as multi-year in duration, often involving substantial safety and licensing requirements with many internal and external regulatory interactions our contracts require substantial negotiation of terms and conditions due to the many work packages, resources and interfaces to manage.

There is also a significant financial commitment (more than $500 million). The scope of responsibility includes the oversight of work performed by contractors in the areas of environmental site assessment, engineering design, construction and remediation (eg. the excavation/removal of LLRW soils and other materials from residential and commercial properties and road allowances and their placement/management in an engineered mound located in Port Hope).

Leadership -> A results-oriented Leader who values establishing cooperative relationships with stakeholders and is able to bring out the best in others. Key attributes include;

  • Establishing a safe, healthy work environment for employees and contractors subject to safety performance and by regularly reviewing and communicating policies, practices, expectations and positive reporting.
  • Minimizing the environmental impact of project activities by driving accountability for environmental compliance and practices as well as role modeling personal environmental responsibility.
  • Building relationships and collaborating with project contractors by understanding their needs and challenges, through early engagement in planning and implementation process that support their success while addressing and resolving issues.
  • Lead meetings and set expectations for project team. Convey a strong sense of urgency and driving issues to closure. Predict issues and potential risks before they arise, while communicating and implement mitigation plans that to lead resolution.

Contract Management -> Provide know-how on overseeing the technical and commercial delivery of contract scopes of work as the project owner. Key attributes include;

  • Actively participating in development of the execution scope of work, workface planning, schedule, budgets and risks of assigned projects to ensure the project plan can be successfully transition to execution.
  • Well-developed project management skill to achieve positive scope, schedule, quality and cost results while managing and mitigating project risks.
  • Actively supervising the performance of each project, using key performance indicators, and taking the vital actions to accurate adverse situations or trends.
  • Regularly reporting the project status to partners and management, proactively raising issues as needed.
  • Performance Monitoring - Ensuring performance of project team members is regularly shared and communicated with functional leaders.

Remediation Innovation -> Interested in being part of the development of complex remediation strategies at sites with challenging geographic and stakeholder interactions:

  • Lead quality assurance - Ensuring projects align with Company standards, specifications, practices and procedures and to government regulations and codes by maintaining high standards of performance.
  • Continuous Improvement - Identify process improvement opportunities and support change initiatives

Education & Experience -> Leveraging from your Engineering, Environmental and Scientific degree and 10+ years of Management experience, you are able to contribute to the success of the largest remediation project of its kind in Canada – a $1.28 billion dollar project!

THE LOCATION
The Historic Waste Program Management Office, is located in the beautiful and historic community of Port Hope, Ontario. Roughly 100kms East of Toronto, Port Hope is located at the mouth of the Ganaraska River on the north shore of Lake Ontario, in the west end of Northumberland County. Basically still close enough to the “Big City” without all the hassle of being in the “Big City”.

If you have a university degree in civil, environmental or geotechnical engineering or Environmental Sciences and a minimum of ten years engineering or related work experience in a Project Management capacity, we want to hear from you! If you can supplement your education and experience further because you have worked on remediation projects in a municipal environment, under a target cost model, that is even better. Professional Designation/Membership in a professional association is required. Certification as a Project Management Professional (PMP) is also an asset.
