Our Opportunity

We have an opportunity available for a permanent, full-time, onsite Purchasing & Inventory Analyst at our Thorold main office and distribution center. The Purchasing & Inventory Analyst is passionate about working with data and researches, compiles and analyzes purchasing and inventory data, and shares recommendations with the Director and other senior management to meet the overall goals of Book Depot as they relate to title selection, space and inventory management, resale compliance, and pricing. The Analyst then leverages their meticulous approach to their work and leadership expertise to coordinate and execute initiatives and ongoing tasks in support of these findings. You will draft complex reporting and regularly monitor and update to reflect sell-through titles and inventory turnover, sorting or stocking decisions, forecasting and administrative controls.

Strategic:

Key measurables or activity-based leading indicators that the job is accountable for includes:

  • Increase title selections by reviewing manifests and making recommendations to prioritize sort arrangements
  • Analyze inventory levels of slow-moving product and meet space requirements for operations by recommending and executing ongoing blow-out sales and purge
  • Actively monitor the sell-through of items to determine days of stock and optimum reorder triggers
  • Research and keep abreast of compliance and tax code expertise; to guide entry of product data into systems and keep organization in good standing

In addition to the strategic purpose of the role outlined above, you will:

  • Work with Director, Purchasing & Inventory and IT to design and build out a scalable inventory management system and reorder platform
  • Develop strong inventory processes and draft reports to scale for future category growth and exceed purchasing and inventory management goals for Book Depot
  • Evaluate manifests of products and compare against current inventory and sales history; make recommendations to sort, hold, blow-out or purge
  • Work alongside the Director Purchasing & Inventory and Director, Operations to understand inventory and space issues/challenges and lead the execution of any actionable items
  • Analyze inventory of cross-border company, American Book Company, to support shared inventory objectives
  • Research and keep abreast of compliance and tax code expertise; to guide entry of product data into systems
  • Research new book sales and sales and pricing trends for retail and wholesale teams
  • Spend time reviewing Google Analytics to spot buying trends which will formulate future buying ideas/strategies
  • Evaluates product forecasts, sales forecast, competitive information and market conditions

Functional:

  • Build strong relationships with Publishers to collect and compile certifications required for resale
  • Analyze inventory statistics to determine which products are selling and not selling
  • Perform extensive research on a wide range of inventory reports, from previous inventory report to national purchasing trends
  • Draft inventory reports that document inventory counts, discrepancies and other stats
  • Report key inventory metrics to management and suggest improvements for inventory control
  • Collaborate with other teams to resolve discrepancies with inventory and revenue, including Marketing and Sales
  • Review all pricing and overall pricing strategy for the DTC and B2B markets, regardless of the type of product; bring forward issues and recommendations
  • Support purchase orders and other coordination of book and non-book buys
  • Develop recommendations and findings for Purchasing & Inventory team and integrate efforts with key internal teams including Operations
  • Track purchasing budgets, results and variances
  • Other related responsibilities as required

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Statistics, Economics, Supply Chain or related field or equivalent training and experience required
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience in procurement or inventory
  • Experience in the publishing or book industry as asset
  • Aptitude in decision making and working with numbers
  • Experience in collecting and analyzing data
  • Strong individual leadership capabilities; proactive
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to function well in a high-paced and, at times, stressful environment.
  • Proficient with spreadsheets and databases
  • Excellent attention to detail and maths
  • Excellent written and oratory skills
  • Goal-oriented, with growth mindset
