THE OPPORTUNITY

The Council is seeking a highly experienced safety codes officer with expertise in the electrical discipline to join our team. As a Safety Codes Auditor, you will be responsible for reviewing the practices, policies, and procedures of accredited organizations to ensure compliance with the terms of accreditation, quality management plans, and the Safety Codes Act.

Additionally, you will provide expert guidance on the Electrical Code, contribute to the improvement of the master electrician program, and participate in the development of Safety Codes Officer training offered by the Council.

Key Responsibilities and Deliverables

• Conduct audits of accredited organizations by reviewing and interpreting data, preparing written working papers and reports, and expressing conclusions of the assessments.
• Evaluate and provide recommendations on audit findings and prepare audit reports.
• Assist accredited organizations and representatives with expert advice and recommendations.
• Provide guidance and advice to other safety codes officers on technical matters.
• Support the development and delivery of training and certification programs for master electricians and safety codes officers.
• Provide analysis and delivery of workshops for safety codes officers regarding roles, responsibilities, and understanding of safety codes operations and related legislations.
• Contribute to the establishment and implementation of improvements to existing methods, policies, procedures, and best practices.

Qualifications & Experience

• Electrical Safety Codes Officer Group A is required; Group B is an asset.
• Minimum 5 years’ experience as a safety codes officer in administering the Canadian Electrical Codes; administering the Alberta Electrical Utility Codes is considered an asset.
• Master Electrician designation considered an asset.
• Post-secondary education in business, auditing, risk analysis, compliance management, or related field considered an asset.
• Working knowledge and understanding of the Safety Codes Act, related regulations, quality management plans, and compliance monitoring practices.
• Demonstrated coaching and mentorship capability.
• Experience in corporate, municipal, or agency setting is an asset.

Notes

• Must possess a valid drivers’ license and be willing to travel throughout the province.
• Position will be permitted to work remotely and will be required to attend monthly meetings in the Council’s office.
• Office location is 10405 Jasper Avenue, Edmonton, Alberta.
• Hours of work: 36.25 hours per week (Monday – Friday).
• Position is subject to a pre-employment background screening, including a criminal record check.

The Safety Codes Council is an independent regulatory body established in 1993 under the Safety Codes Act. The Council provides oversight of Alberta’s safety codes system through a number of key mandated functions including:

• Accrediting and monitoring the compliance of municipalities, agencies, corporations, and regional service commissions in administering the Safety Codes Act within specified jurisdictions.
• For the 300,000 Albertans who live in unaccredited areas of the province, the Alberta Safety Codes Authority (ASCA), conducts permitting, inspections and oversees spill and incident reporting requirements for storage tank systems across the province.
• Training and certifying safety codes officers to inspect the construction, installation and maintenance of Alberta’s structures and systems and administering Alberta’s Master Electrician program.
• Reviewing, formulating, safety codes and standards, and evaluating emerging issues in the safety codes system to provide recommendations to Alberta Municipal Affairs.
• Investigating complaints and conducting investigations on the conduct, performance, or competency of an organization or individual having authority, powers, or duties under the Safety Codes Act.
• Conducting hearings and appeals of orders and written notices issued under the authority of the Safety Codes Act.
