School Garden Grower Educator @ Deep Cove Elementary Job at Growing Young Farmers Society

Growing Young Farmers Society Saanich, BC

Growing Young Farmers Society (GYFS) is a non-profit that builds and staffs school gardens in and around Victoria BC. Our program emphasizes the importance of local, organic, sustainable food sources and teaches children and youth how to grow healthy produce - encouraging them to share their knowledge with their families and community.

We are currently looking for 1-2 new Grower Educators to start this Sept/ October

We are currently hiring for the following School Programs

1) Deep Cove Elementary: 10975 W Saanich Rd, North Saanich,

2) North Saanich Middle School (Classes at Sandown: 1810 Glamorgan Rd, North Saanich)

3) Keating Elementary: 6843 Central Saanich Rd

We are looking for someone who loves to work with kids, has a passion and a knowledge of gardening, and who can commit to teaching during our Fall Garden Sessions that run from Sept-Early November. Following this time, there is an opportunity to teach each Spring from March- June. The job pays $20 an hour and is perfect for someone who is available to work once or twice a week. The School Garden Class Schedule is created using your availability and the availability of the school, making it very flexible. This is also a great opportunity for the applicant to see what our organization is about- with the potential for more opportunities through our summer camps, other school gardens, or as a member of the GYFS Board.

Job Requirements

  • The applicant will need to pass a criminal record check.
  • Preference will be given to individuals that have a history of supervising and working with children.
  • Knowledge of gardening and/or farming practices is a must.
  • Many of our schools offer French Immersion. Applicants who can speak French are encouraged to apply but this is not a requirement for the job.

This work is very independent. Most Grower Educators spend 1 day per week teaching 4-6 classes outside with the support of the classroom teacher (~7 hrs/day). Educators also work closely with a "Champion Teacher" who helps to gather supplies for the garden, fundraise and communicate with the school and parents about the program.

Upon hire, applicants will be invited to attend a group training session -with fellow Grower Educators where they will be given example lesson plans and specific training on how to teach at, and run a school garden program.
