The BC Prosecution Service (BCPS) contributes to the protection of society by preparing for and conducting prosecutions diligently and fairly. BCPS prosecutes offences under the Criminal Code of Canada, the Youth Criminal Justice Act and Provincial Statutes in the Provincial, Supreme and Appeal Courts of British Columbia and in the Supreme Court of Canada. BCPS provides legal advice to Government and police on criminal law matters and develops policies and procedures on issues relating to the prosecution of criminal justice.
Senior Legal Analysts are responsible for providing support to Crown Counsel on serious, sensitive and complex prosecution case files in preparation for court proceedings. This position is responsible for performing a variety of legal services with a high degree of independence and under limited supervision. The work is carried out in a high-profile and fast-paced office in which flexibility, teamwork, tact, diplomacy, communication and organization are essential for the efficient, accurate, successful and timely completion of responsibilities.
Senior Legal Analysts spend the majority of their time (80%) on providing dedicated support to prepare legal case files for complex cases, providing advice and guidance to Legal Assistants on escalated cases and issues, and providing senior legal analysis to legal documents including redacting privileged information on complex cases.
Job Requirements:
- Secondary school graduation or equivalent;
- Successful completion of a recognized Legal Assistant certificate OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience working in a legal office;
- Minimum of 2 years of recent (within the last 7 years) experience working in a legal office.
- Minimum of 18 months working with the BC Prosecution Service.
Preference may be given to applicants with the following:
- Successful completion of a Legal Assistant or Paralegal certificate.
- More than 2 years of recent (within the last 7 years) experience working in a legal office.
- Experience working as a Legal Assistant in a criminal law office.
