The Research and Implementation Branch at Integrated Justice Services is seeking a Data Scientist. The branch serves the Ministry of Corrections, Policing and Public Safety, the Ministry of Justice and Attorney General, and the Ministry of Social Services. It helps research and design solutions for pressing issues in the criminal justice system and human services. Reporting to the Director of Applied Research and Development, the Data Scientist will identify strategic research questions, determine the best available data and methods to answer those questions, retrieve and clean that data, conduct statistical analyses, creatively communicate results, and collaboratively set direction based on the evidence. The data scientist will contribute to a variety of research projects and be a key lead in work with the Ministry of Social Services’ Child and Family Programs.

Applicants must be familiar with social science research design and applied statistical analyses (including hypothesis testing, nonparametric methods, and effect size calculations). You should have experience applying data to policy problems and creatively and clearly communicating research results. Familiarity with creating performance monitoring frameworks or conducting program evaluations would be an asset.

The skills for this position are typically acquired through a graduate degree in the social sciences with a quantitative research focus combined with work experience in a human service research setting. The ideal candidate has knowledge of government policy development, excellent Excel capabilities, and familiarity with advanced data analyses software and programing languages (e.g., SPSS, SAS, R, Python).
