WHAT THE ROLE ENTAILS:

Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Director, Operations Control Centre (OCC) plays an instrumental role in leading a core component of Lynx Air’s operations. The Operations Control Centre (OCC) is the nerve center of Lynx Air. The OCC uses real-time operational information to keep the airline running smoothly. Awareness of up-to-date airline operations information, among the groups residing in the OCC area, is critical. The Lynx Air OCC is made up of Operations Coordinators, Operations Duty Managers, Crew Schedulers, Crew Planners and representatives from Airports and Technical Operations. Flight Dispatch is outsourced. The Director, OCC is the primary point of contact for all aspects of the airlines' operations, and as such works closely with the Operations Manager, Chief Pilot, Director of Inflight, and external vendors regarding all matters pertaining to the day-to-day operations, company policy, and Operations Control. This position also maintains the responsibility for the Flight Dispatch vendor, daily Crew Scheduling, and monthly Crew Rostering departments.

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING:

  • Provide strong and inspired leadership that motivates team members to reach a higher standard, ensuring that the OCC is properly organized, staffed, developed and motivated. Additionally, demonstrate the ability to work effectively as a leader with strong communication, listening, presentation and advocacy skills related to individual members of OCC and support teams. Foster Lynx Air’s vision and organizational culture throughout the work environment under their direction
  • The Director, OCC will serve as the incident commander for all emergency contingencies. Ensure that Lynx Air has full emergency preparedness within the Operations Control Centre function
  • Provide active leadership in the resolution of operations issues as they arise, deploying specific expertise and bringing in others as needed
  • Manage third-party dispatch service provider
  • Maintain operational control at all times in accordance with established CARs regulations, other applicable regulatory agencies, and Lynx Air internal mandates; and take corrective action when needed to improve or ensure ongoing compliance
  • Liaise with Network Planning and Schedule Planning to ensure Lynx Air’s schedule has appropriate and efficient block times, ground turn times, and aircraft routing. Develop recommendations for the fleet structure and spare aircraft availability and spare deployment to limit the impact of IROPs (irregular operations) and unscheduled maintenance events. Participate in focused process engineering in ground operations, passenger processing, and the general departure process.
  • Participation in Crew member scheduling and planning. Responsible to analyze, evaluate, and approve all future proposed flight schedules and monthly schedule changes. Identify, develop, implement and manage pairing-building strategies, based on reporting and analysis that will create and improve scheduling efficiencies and operational performance. Identify and request flight schedule changes that will alleviate potential crewing issues as well as unnecessary crewing expenses
  • Responsible for establishing and managing the Safety Management System (SMS) within the OCC. Responsible to ensure the Quality Assurance (QA) program fulfills the requirements for operational audits, safety audits, quality control reviews, IOSA, and Transport Canada audits
  • Serve as the key catalyst for introducing efficient thinking, approaches, practices, processes, tools, and systems into the airline’s Operations Control Centre function
  • Work with Finance and People & Culture teams to develop and execute staffing plans necessary for planned operations and communicate changes that affect staffing as early as possible to internal business partners
  • Constructs an environment dedicated to continuous improvement and measure Lynx Air’s performance against industry standards and prevailing best practices
  • Assume an active role in the development of future Lynx Air leaders across operations and maintains an active succession plan for the department
  • Maintains and revises manuals, training, and other documentation for all Operations Control Centre functions
  • Based on the broad direction provided by the operating plan, negotiate and operate within the budget for the Operations Control Centre function
  • Provide timely and accurate reporting of operating results and other special projects and initiatives under their direction
  • As a senior member of the operating leadership team, contribute to the overall operating plan of Lynx Air by participating in the ongoing planning process to produce clear and compelling mid and long-term objectives
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Chief Operating Officer

WHAT YOU BRING TO THE ROLE:

  • Commercial aviation industry experience, with a minimum of 5 years of relevant industry experience and a well-established industry network and reputation
  • Broad-based airline operations control centre leadership experience, ideally having led all or a substantial part of an airline OCC function
  • Demonstrated strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ideally, but not necessarily, exposure to a sector of the airline industry featuring a high degree of cost-consciousness including regional, low-cost, or charter. Has ideally led effectively within lean and resource-limited work environments
  • A demonstrated change agent who can overcome inertia and the inherent aversion to change among long-standing employees. Comfortable with new, different and creative approaches to operations, and innovation in this regard
  • An approachable and “hands-on” leader, willing to do real work without “air” or pretense.
  • A track record of continually challenging the status quo and pursuing new ideas and initiatives to reduce costs while enhancing customer service
  • Prior experience with the systems, processes and tools deployed in larger companies but ideally with experience applying them in smaller company contexts
  • Experience deploying information and related technology to drive operations efficiency
  • Strong business and financial acumen, ideally with some direct exposure to business, and non-operational domains such as finance or commercial
  • Ability to carry out SMS senior leader responsibilities as outlined in the Company Safety Manual (CSM).
  • Experience serving as the designated Emergency Director or equivalent position is desired
  • A track record of productive engagement with organized labour. Has enjoyed productive working relationships with airline unions and the proven ability to constructively engage organized labour groups
  • An unblemished record as related to his or her ethical integrity and that of the organizations he or she has served
  • Willing and able to relocate to the Calgary area
  • A post-secondary undergraduate degree in a relevant field is desired, preferably complemented by an MBA or related graduate degree
  • Qualified Flight Dispatcher or Airline Transport Pilots License (ATPL) is preferred
  • Very strong and well-developed people leadership and people development skills, with an ability to inspire and motivate staff while holding them accountable for results
