EHS Specialist Job at GFL Environmental Inc.
GFL is looking to hire an EHS Specialist to join our team! This role works primarily with the Health, Safety and Environmental Management System (HSEMS) and its day to day operations. A good communicator is required to act as HSEMS Leader by providing training and responding to inquiries regarding system functionality. Highly organized, this role supports the reporting of site EHS KPIs for use at the site, BU and Corporate levels. This role also supports day to day operations associated with safety, health and environmental programs, EHS objectives/targets, personnel training, regulatory compliance, recordkeeping/reporting, and other associated EHS programs.
Supports the HSEMS and the efforts to control risk and ensure continual improvement beyond compliance.
Updates EHS management system documentation and communicates revised processes to all stakeholders.
Key Accountabilities of the position include:
Analyze Issues - Gathers relevant information systematically; considers a broad range of issues or factors; grasps complexities and perceives relationships among problems or issues; seeks input from others; uses accurate logic in analyses.
Health and Safety Management Systems - An Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) management system provides a framework for managing OHS responsibilities so they become more efficient and more integrated into overall business operations. OHS management systems are based on standards that specify a process of achieving continuously improved OHS performance and compliance with legislation.
Control of Hazardous Substances - Control of Hazardous Substances requires knowledge of HAZWOPER (Hazardous Waste Operations & Emergency Response) basics, Global Harmonization, SDS (Safety Data Sheets), chemical labeling requirements, spill reporting, control methods, spill prevention, and chemical exposure.
Incident Investigation - The method of reporting the occurrence of an occupational injury/illness, near hit, or property damage. Incident investigations determine how and why these failures occur. Employees should be able to perform a thorough, effective incident investigation including root cause analysis, 5-why analysis and development of effective corrective actions.
Health & Safety Professional Knowledge (Including Regulatory Compliance) - Health & Safety Professional Knowledge relates to having comprehensive knowledge of occupational safety and health compliance. Regulatory compliance deals with the regulatory requirements imposed on industry by local, state, provincial, national, and international organizations. Detailed understanding of how the provisions of the regulations, as applicable may be implemented in the workplace, rights and responsibilities under the various acts/ regulations/ rules, the appeals process, record keeping (OSHA), and Voluntary Protection Programs (OSHA). Understanding of general industry standards and the requirements of the more frequently referenced standards.
Assist with Environmental Auditing - Environmental auditing is the process of evaluating conformance/compliance with established regulatory, ISO 14001, and internal requirements. The effectiveness of an internal audit program is almost entirely dependent upon the skills, training, and experience of the Audit Team Leader and Audit Team members. Auditors should be functionally aware of all areas of environmental management and possess an expert level understanding of the criteria to which they are auditing. Where applicable, the audit program should be structured in a manner that will facilitate the integration of safety management system audits
Qualifications and Experience
Communication skills and the ability to influence others.
Experience using Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel in a professional capacity
The ability to work as a member of a team and independently on projects
Business acumen, strong analytical skills, strategic thinking abilities, and an understanding of organizational behavior.
OSHA or MSHA experience and a general understanding of the regulations.
EMR experience an asset
ISN, Complyworks, Avetta, Contractor Check knowledge and/or experience an asset
Fleet safety considered an asset
A thorough knowledge of applicable government regulations, safety compliance, and industrial hygiene.
Passion for Safety Minimum Education
Pursuit of CRSP, NCSO or other professionally recognized safety certification
Undergraduate degree/diploma specializing in the field of occupational health and safety
Valid Class 5 License Minimum Work Experience
Three to five years of related Health and Safety work experience Skills and Competencies
Strong computer, organizational, communication and interpersonal skills
Excellent safety and health track record in programs and processes.
Experience in training and education
Exceptional organizational and time management skills
Professional and positive attitude, excellent work ethic, strong desire to learn and succeed
Basic chemistry knowledge for SDS requirements and interpretation
Ability to work independently and capable of forming strong working relationships/partnerships with Site Leadership teams, clients and hourly work force
Knowledge of health and safety legislation
Experience with TDG, both handling and transportation is considered an asset
Calm demeanor in emergency situations
