Seeds of Change Surrey (SOCS) is a collective impact initiative active in Surrey and White Rock stewarded by Sources BC. The collaboration includes various non-profit and public sector entities focused on changing systems and structures to improve food security in our communities.
Working with Sources, Fraser Health, and the City of Surrey as well as the SOCS partners, the Food Literacy and Food Justice Convener will:
· Convene the food literacy working group, engage with the Black African Caribbean (BAC) Advisory Committee of SOCS, and support the group in asset mapping. The role will also support tasks arising from the committee work with the BAC Advisory to ensure a focus on equity, food justice and intersectionality.
· Design and implement a plan for more effective outreach and coordination of food literacy efforts and work towards establishing the framework of shared measures to monitor and measure the impacts of the food literacy work.
· Represent the food literacy working groups and present on behalf of the working group back to SOCS to help SOCS members strengthen existing relationships and identify new opportunities for collaboration to advance food systems work.
· Support the work of SOCS by providing coordination and administrative support to our collaborative table; and by working to broaden our impact through community engagement, asset-mapping needs assessments, and the development of systems advocacy tools and strategies.
· Function as a spokesperson for the food literacy/justice working group as needed.
· Liaise between the Seeds of Change backbone committee and the Black African Canadian Advisory Committee.
· Orient and onboard new members of the Food Literacy Working Group to the working group's goals and Seeds of Change's goals.
Sources and Fraser Health jointly supervise this project, and the incumbent will be accountable for achieving all deliverables:
Contract Deliverables:
1. Convene monthly food justice and food literacy partners in Surrey and White Rock to advance asset mapping and implement the food literacy strategy (minimum of ten meetings in the contractual period).
2. Keep the City of Surrey COSMOS map up to date with food literacy partners (by April 2023).
3. Recruit and develop new partnerships for engagement in the food literacy and justice working group (at least five new partners) by May 2023.
4. Formalize a needs assessment and analyze results that describe the food literacy and justice partner’s needs, resources available, opportunities, and recommendations by March 2023.
5. Identify systemic policy changes through the working group related to food literacy that would help advance the group’s efforts and bring those to the attention of the SOCS leadership team as they arise. (April 2023)
6. Identify shared measures in the food literacy working group and BAC Advisory Committee. Develop a process to collect these common measures to include them in the evaluation process. (June 2023)
7. Participate in SOCS meetings and provide regular updates (monthly)
8. Provide progress reports at pre-defined intervals.
9. Develop a two to three-year food literacy and food justice strategy by April 2023 with the food literacy and food justice partners. Report back to SOCS for approval of the process and design used in the strategy development. The plan requires endorsement from the food literacy and justice partners and approval by the leadership team of Seeds of Change.
10. Compile a short report (less than six pages) outlining the strategy and key actions taken by the partners to advance the next steps.
11. Assist the food literacy and justice partners to implement the strategy and report back on strategy implementation monthly between January 2023, and June 30, 2023
12. Report publicly at SOCS meetings on the results of the progress with the food literacy and food justice working group.
Qualifications:
· Deep understanding of food justice and literacy through education, work and/or lived experience.
· Previous community engagement and/or coordination experience.
· Knowledge of the local Surrey community
· Knowledge of food systems, including production, processing, distribution, access, and consumption
· Previous experience or willingness to embed a trauma-informed and anti-racist lens as well as practice cultural humility
