Industry Liaison Officer, Office of Research Services

Temporary position until March 29, 2024

Responsibilities

The Industry Liaison Officer (ILO) will be responsible for the effective development of the Northern and rural innovation cluster focused on critical minerals, cleantech, and battery electric technologies including electric vehicles. The ILO will be hired on a 10-11 month contract to advance the cluster in collaboration with technology transfer office staff at the partnering post-secondary institutions (Lakehead University; Laurentian University; Nipissing University; Trent University). The successful candidate will report directly to the Director, Research and Innovation at the lead institution (Laurentian University) while also working closely with the research and innovation teams at each of the collaborating universities.

The ILO will be a self-starter, with a continuous improvement and innovation mindset. They will be responsible for engaging with all four universities, organizing and coordinating business development engagements and supporting commercialization activities notably with small to medium enterprises (SMEs), as part of the Office of the Vice-President, Research. The incumbent will be responsible for the development of the Northern and Rural Innovation Cluster, with a particular focus on critical minerals, cleantech and EV. This will include broadening the relationship between industry and the universities, the creation of an asset map identifying research expertise and relevant innovation ecosystem resources and supports, working with the provincial intellectual property agency (IPON), supporting IP literacy, and supporting access to commercialization services.

  • Assist in the preparation and delivery of intellectual property educational sessions utilizing online and provincial/IPON resources
  • Develop deep knowledge of the research capabilities and interests of university faculty and Research Centres in the area of critical minerals, cleantech, battery electric technologies and EV
  • Work in close collaboration with all university commercialization staff
  • Lead the organization, planning and implementation of Regional Network Meetings
  • Lead the organization of an Industry and PSI Commercialization Event focused on critical minerals, cleantech, battery electric technologies and EV
  • Report on business development activities from demonstration to initial implementation to commercialization for innovations
  • Utilize project management and customer relationship management tools to monitor efforts
  • Effectively and accurately communicate relevant project information internally and externally

Qualifications

  • University or college degree in related field;
  • At least 5 years of experience working in innovation and commercialization with demonstrated knowledge of critical minerals, cleantech, battery electric technologies and electric vehicles;
  • Experience managing innovation and commercialization programs with industry and university or college sector partners;
  • Demonstrated understanding of IPON and experience implementing programs aimed at;
  • advancing innovation and commercialization;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to facilitate interactions with industry partners, IPON staff, and faculty, staff and students at universities.

The official University hours of operation shall be from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, during, and including, the months from September to April, and from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m Monday through Friday during and including May to August., amounting to thirty-three and three-quarter (33.75) hours per week.

Effective May 1, 2022 the Policy and Program on COVID-19 Vaccination are placed in abeyance. This means the Policy and Program on COVID-19 Vaccination are paused at this time; however, they are not canceled and could be reinstated at a future date if public health conditions warrant it, or through guidance from federal, provincial or local public health authorities. The evolution of the virus and the course of the disease activity are difficult to predict and it may be necessary to reinstate the Policy in full or in part, on short notice. When the Policy and Program on COVID-19 Vaccination are paused, persons entering Laurentian’s campus will no longer be required to provide proof of vaccination in order to attend campus.
