Junior Associate / Licensed Paralegal Job Opening (Starting January 2, 2023).

$50K - $60K Commensurate with Experience.

The firm is seeking a junior associate who will be the legal assistant that works directly with and reports to the managing partner (the "MP").

As the MP's Legal Assistant, the Candidate must be a licensed and Insured Paralegal, Notary Public, and Member of the LSO in good standing with at least 3 years experience doing the following:

  • Advocacy at the Small Claims Court and in Administrative Tribunals (i.e. HRTO);
  • Initial client consultations;
  • File updates / management
  • Drafting contracts (i.e. Offers to Settle, Minutes of Settlement, Retainer Agreements, Letters of Engagement, etc.);
  • Legal Research, forming theories of a case, and drafting Memoranda of Law and Case Briefs;
  • Drafting Statements of Claim and Defence, Notices of Motion, Affidavits, etc.
  • Preparing Trial Exhibit Books / Documents Briefs in accordance with the Rules of the Small Claims Court and the Rules of Civil Procedure;
  • Commissioning and notarizing documents;
  • Appearing for clients in legal proceedings (ie. settlement conferences,mediations, motions, civil trials, judgement-debtor examinations etc.);

The following are essential skills for the job.

  • Strong leadership skills (i.e. the ability to lead by example, with respect, kindness and empathy, and the ability to delegate and give instructions to junior assistants and law clerks);
  • Strong communication and drafting skills;
  • Strong internet, and general computer skills, including familiarity with Google Workspace applications (i.e. Google Drive, Docs, Sheets, Forms, etc.);
  • Strong timekeeping / docketing and time management skills;
  • Ability to complete tasks with a high degree of competence and meet deadlines;
  • Teachable/coachable, able to follow instructions, and willing to be trained;
  • Highly organized, self-motivated, and able to follow organizational systems;
  • Loyal and able to maintain strict confidentiality;
  • Strong knowledge of the Rules of the Small Claims Court; and
  • Drivers' License is Required for this job.

This job may require the following additional tasks, and experience with any of the following is not required but is a competitive asset:

  • Drafting legal blog posts; and
  • Candidate must be willing to aid in the creation of, and be comfortable with public speaking about legal educational topics and content on the firm's social media platforms and for special events and CPD workshops hosted by the firm to other licensees.

Although general business hours are between 9am - 5pm, the Candidate must be flexible and able to work some evenings and weekends when required to meet deadlines.

Lastly, although the firm operates out of an in-person law chambers in downtown Toronto, the Candidate must have a dedicated space at which to be able to work virtually from time-to-time, and may be required to travel to and from courts in various territorial jurisdictions from time-to-time (transportation expenses shall be reimbursed).
