POSITION SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Manager, Marketing and Communications, the Media Relations/Communications Writer plays an important and diverse role in supporting IHSA’s marketing and communications strategies and objectives. The Media Relations/Communications Writer has a range of duties and responsibilities that include the planning and executing of marketing and communications initiatives and the writing and editing of both corporate level communications as well as technical documents and marketing materials that target general audiences. The Media Relations/Communications Writer also acts as editor of IHSA.ca Health and Safety Magazine and is responsible for providing guidance to other writers on articles and ads, and to graphic designers on design concepts and magazine layout. Key to the Media Relations/Communications Writer role is the ability to positively impact how IHSA communicates with its different stakeholders and the members of the sectors it serves, and to do so in a manner that not only promotes IHSA services across the province of Ontario but also effectively informs and educates its key audiences.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
- The Media Relations/Communications Writer will work closely with other writers and graphic designers in an editor’s capacity including on IHSA.ca Health and Safety Magazine. Responsibilities include providing feedback and guidance to writers on clarity and tone of subject matter and to graphic designers to ensure design and layout of articles, covers, and ads have visual impact and convey appropriate and effective IHSA messaging. Prior to publication, the Media Relations/Communications Writer will be responsible for reviewing and approving final magazine proofs from the printer, and other publications as assigned.
- The incumbent will also manage a range of projects such as events, promotional initiatives, campaigns, etc. This includes monitoring budgets to ensure they are not exceeded and taking the lead and guiding coworkers throughout the planning and execution process.
- The Media Relations/Communications Writer will ensure that communications and content meet professional editorial standards and will excel at performing the different levels of required editing (structural, stylistic, copyediting, proofreading) with confidence and skill.
- Other duties will include crafting clear and effective informational and marketing copy that targets specific audiences (i.e., corporate, general) and promotes IHSA objectives and mission, and thoroughly researching and drafting copy for brochures, catalogues, magazine articles, safety manuals, advisories, ads, etc. This role also requires contributing to the creation of IHSA’s Annual Report by conducting research and working with other IHSA departments to gather appropriate data to create concise, informative sections for the Report.
- Responsible for demonstrating a diverse writing style that can effectively speak to different types of audiences with varying education levels. Of significant importance is the ability to simplify and make technical language accessible in different communication materials including notices, health and safety advisories, instructional workbooks, and a range of other technical documents from different IHSA departments.
- The Media Relations/Communications Writer conduct interviews with different types of industry partners including high-profile stakeholders and IHSA members in a way that not only facilitates openness and trust but also demonstrates professionalism and grasp of relevant issues.
- Maintain IHSA.ca website as required and be able to serve as a back-up (upload documents and emergency notices) when the Digital Media Coordinator is unavailable.
- Monitor media for industry health and safety items, and craft media releases and maintain relationships with trade publications and other media as well as liaising and maintaining relationships with government and industry stakeholders.
- Work with vendors to acquire quotes and approve proofs for different marketing materials such as pamphlets, manuals, posters, etc.
- The Media Relations/Communications Writer will sometimes be required to represent IHSA and make visits to different workplaces to conduct interviews and take photos of jobsites and personnel.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Post-secondary education (i.e. B.A. in English, journalism, or marketing) required and Master’s degree in English with a focus on composition and editing preferred.
- Editing Skills Certificate that meets the learning objectives of the EAC’s Professional Editor designation or equivalent required.
- A minimum five years of employment experience in writing, editing, and proofreading for various formats, including newsletters, magazine articles, technical documents, and corporate communications.
- Editing and proofreading work of other writers, providing feedback and editorial guidance.
- Developing marketing and communications plans and managing multiple projects as required.
- Conducting interviews and independent research and networking by phone and in person with media, government officials, print suppliers, and others.
- Robust knowledge of style and grammar guides, such as Chicago and Canadian Press.
- Previous experience with photography, using SLR cameras, pre-press software such as Adobe InDesign, and basic HTML and uploading for maintaining website content preferred.
- 75% minimum interview score required for consideration.
