If your have a high level of energy and love working with elementary school aged children, this summer camp leader position (30 hours per week) could be a good fit for you. Successful candidates may continue into the fall with part time before/after school shifts (9 to 25 hours per week) that can work around their studies. There are also shifts available in the after school program (2:15pm - 6:00pm) between now and summer, which we would like the leader to help out with to prepare for the summer season. The leader will also help drive our vans for short field trips, so must be comfortable driving a van with children in it.
Licensed as a Before/After School daycare, we run weekly summer camps where children participate in a well rounded selection of recreational/artistic/creative activities. Our dynamic team of caregivers bring so much more than just supervision to our programming. Our school year programming includes art, music, homework help, financial awareness activities, and outdoor recreation time. The summer camp activities add in trips to the beach/swimming pools, more outdoor playtime, weekly projects like designing and building a city plus more.
Our ideal candidates must be comfortable leading groups of 12 or more children. Experience or education supporting youth with challenging behaviour is also highly valued. Our candidates should be comfortable with positive behavioural support strategies and critical thinking skills or have a desire to learn these skills (as we will train you)! Expertise or passion in teaching any type of art, music, drama, or other recreational type program is a big asset.
Summer camp shifts are 5-7 hours long, usually beginning either at 7:00am, 8:30am or 12:00noon.
Optional: During the school year, shift times are flexible, but we require you to be available 3-5 days a week either from 7:00am to 9:00am, or from 2:45pm to 6:00pm - ideally both.
Must have Standard First Aid and CPR C or be willing to obtain it prior to employment
General Duties and Responsibilities:
- Leading children in a variety of activities: sports, games, crafts, etc. If you specialize in one type of activity (e.g. Music), we will work with you for you to be able to share that expertise with the children. If you are more of a generalist, you can pick from the activities that are already developed for that curriculum area.
- Supervising children to ensure safety in the program.
- Performing first aid treatment.
- Planning daily activities based on curriculum outlines.
- Set-up and take down of shared spaces.
- Liaising with parents/caregivers on a regular basis.
- Participating in regular staff meetings and training sessions.
- Developing positive relationships with participants and acting as a role model and mentor.
- Assisting children as they eat their snacks.
- Supervising participants on trips away from the centre.
- Assisting with sterilization and light cleaning of the centre
- (optional) Driving children to and from school or activities and assisting then as they get into/out of the van.
- Other duties as required.
Qualifications:
- At least 19 years of age.
- A high level of functional spoken and written English skills sufficient to ensure successful communication with staff, children and parents
- 1-2 years of experience providing care and guidance to school-aged children in a daycare or recreational setting.
- At least 20 hours in child development, guidance, health and safety or nutrition.
- Current Standard First Aid and CPR C (or equivalent) certification.
- Current clear criminal record search.
- Class 5 Driver’s License, clean driver's abstract and sufficient driving experience to be comfortable driving children a short drive to school (Optional)
- Class 4 unrestricted Driver's License (is an asset)
