Radio System Specialist Job at Ministry of the Solicitor General
The Ministry of the Solicitor General, Ontario Provincial Police, and the Communications & Technology Services Bureau are seeking a qualified individual to join our unit. In this exciting, rewarding and challenging opportunity, you will provide specialized technical expertise, analysis, advice, support and recommendations in the operation and maintenance of radio technology systems in the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and its ministry/agency partners, in a 24-7/365 telecommunications environment.
Note: This posting is for a six (6) month temporary opportunity with the possibility of extension. The results of this competition will be used to fill current and future temporary and permanent opportunities with qualified eligible candidate within the unit during the next 12 months following the competition closing. Please notify your manager of your intentions to apply to this competition. Regular employees are required to have manager approval prior to accepting a temporary opportunity. When a regular member is the successful candidate for the temporary opportunity they would return to their home position at the conclusion of the temporary opportunity. Only business-related expenses will be provided. There are no provisions for relocation, accommodation or travel (including meals or vehicles) for this position. Exact dates are to be determined.

What can I expect to do in this role?
To provide specialized technical expertise, analysis, advice, support and recommendations in the operation and maintenance of radio technology systems in the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and its ministry/agency partners, in a 24-7/365 telecommunications environment.How do I qualify?
Mandatory
- Ability to pass an OPP background/ security investigation.
- Valid Ontario Driver's Licence.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of the FleetNet radio system to diagnose problems and accommodate changes or upgrades.
- Knowledge of evolving Radio Technologies and Land Mobile Radio solutions
- Knowledge of all sub-system components involved in the telecommunications system and their inter- relationship, including, portable and base radios and repeaters, standby and back-up power systems, alarm reporting system, telephone and radio system switches, dispatch computer, communications consoles, voicemail systems, console and voice recording systems and network tie lines.
- Knowledge of communications software to manage LAN operations within a Communications Centre.
- Analytical and evaluative skills to identify root causes and resolve technical malfunctions, and to recommend solutions such as radio and telecommunication system changes and reconfigurations.
- Evaluative and problem-solving skills to analyze the condition, technical performance and capacity of existing system components within OPP control by isolating electrical, mechanical and software elements to determine how they interact and identify the nature of the problem; applying these skills to research, identify and set priorities to correct problems, make repairs, replace parts and devise new solutions utilizing existing resources and/or directing contractors.
- Ability to plan, schedule and prioritize own work, providing notice of schedule and plans to the supervisor; work with minimal supervision, particularly when operating in the field.
