Join a dedicated team of hardworking, supportive professionals that take pride in promoting the safety of all Albertans. The Safety Codes Council is seeking a permanent full-time Fire Safety Codes Officer to join the Storage Tank Systems team.

The Safety Codes Officer provides technical guidance to new applicants and current owners of storage tank systems by providing site inspections of new installations and ongoing regular site inspections within unaccredited areas across Alberta.

Reporting to the Manager, Storage Tank Systems, this position works within the National Fire Code – 2019 Alberta Edition, as it relates to flammable and combustible storage tanks, Safety Codes Act, associated regulations, Safety Codes Council policies, department business and operational plans, and department guidelines.

The successful candidate must demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills, a high level of accuracy and attention to detail, and the ability to work independently while exercising good judgement and sound decision making.

As the Safety Codes Officer, you will:

  • Provide general and technical advice and guidance through expert interpretation of the Safety Codes Act and regulations, as they relate to flammable and combustible liquid storage tanks.
  • Review permit applications and supporting documents such as engineered drawings, specification sheets and shop drawings for compliance to appropriate codes and standards.
  • Provide safety system support to the public, industry, agencies, municipalities, corporations and other Safety Codes Officers related to the administration of the Safety Codes Act and our mandate.
  • Monitor and evaluate new and existing Storage Tank Systems, the Safety Codes Act and related policies.
  • Conduct inspections on new tank work to include installations, alterations and removals.
  • Perform routine inspections of existing systems based on risk evaluations, complaints and at the discretion of the Safety Codes Officer.
  • Report and investigate spills, leaks or similar incidents in cooperation with local authorities and other provincial agencies as required.
  • Provide leadership throughout Alberta to ensure stakeholders, partners and others associated with the industry are able to get the service required or requested.

Qualifications & Experience

  • 2 years’ experience as a safety codes officer in administering Fire Codes
  • Active Fire Safety Codes Officer certification
  • Fire Safety Codes Officer Group E, or
  • Fire Safety Codes Officer Group B2 and currently in process of obtaining Fire Safety Codes Officer Group E certification, or
  • PM2 certification from the Canadian Petroleum Contractors Association (CPCA) and currently in process of obtaining Fire Safety Codes Officer Group E certification
  • Post-secondary education related to business or applied technologies and sciences is considered an asset
  • Equivalencies for education and experience will be considered

Notes

  • Must possess a valid drivers’ license and be willing to travel throughout the province on a frequent basis.
  • Position will be permitted to work remotely and will be required to attend quarterly meetings in the Council’s office.
  • Office location is 10405 Jasper Avenue, Edmonton, Alberta.
  • Hours of work: 36.25 hours per week (Monday – Friday).
  • Position is subject to a pre-employment background screening, including a criminal record check.

About the Safety Codes Council
The Safety Codes Council is an independent regulatory body established in 1993 under the Safety Codes Act. The Council provides oversight of Alberta’s safety codes system through a number of key mandated functions including:

  • Accrediting and monitoring the compliance of municipalities, agencies, corporations, and regional service commissions in administering the Safety Codes Act within specified jurisdictions.
  • For the 300,000 Albertans who live in unaccredited areas of the province, the Alberta Safety Codes Authority (ASCA), conducts permitting, inspections and oversees spill and incident reporting requirements for storage tank systems across the province.
  • Training and certifying safety codes officers to inspect the construction, installation and maintenance of Alberta’s structures and systems and administering Alberta’s Master Electrician program.
  • Reviewing, formulating, safety codes and standards, and evaluating emerging issues in the safety codes system to provide recommendations to Alberta Municipal Affairs.
  • Investigating complaints and conducting investigations on the conduct, performance, or competency of an organization or individual having authority, powers, or duties under the Safety Codes Act.
  • Conducting hearings and appeals of orders and written notices issued under the authority of the Safety Codes Act.
