About Our Opportunity


The Tourism Research Analyst is responsible for leading the collection, organization, analysis, and reporting of tourism information to internal and external stakeholders. In addition, the Research Analyst co-ordinates Tourism Nova Scotia’s tourism indicators program, which includes providing support to seven visitor enumerators.


This position reports to the Manager, Research, Tourism Nova Scotia.

Primary Accountabilities


  • Responsible for the Nova Scotia Tourism Accommodations database. This includes keeping the database up to date, as well as running and interpreting monthly published reports on accommodations performance.
  • Responsible for Tourism Nova Scotia's monthly tourism indicators program. This includes:
    • Designing shift schedules and assisting the Research Manager to support and co-ordinate the activities of seven visitor enumerators located at Halifax airport and the Nova Scotia-New Brunswick border.
    • Compiling estimates of non-resident visitation by mode of entry and origin.
    • Co-ordinating the receipt of monthly visitor data from external partners including ferry operators, airports and ports.
    • Maintaining communications with accommodations operators for the receipt of monthly occupancy data.
    • Maintaining tourism statistics databases, current and historic.
    • Developing commentary and providing research to aid in the interpretation of the monthly statistics.
  • Participates in quality control, analysis and troubleshooting for a new online, data portal for accommodation operators, and for assisting both operators and administrators in transitioning to the portal.
  • Analyzes and develops tourism research reports using data from various datasets, including Statistics Canada data, and Tourism Nova Scotia statistical databases.
  • Responds to requests for tourism research information from internal and external stakeholders, and leads research and analysis in response to these requests.
  • May perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Experience


You possess a Bachelor’s degree + 3 years related experience; or Master’s degree + 1 year experience.


You have experience and are comfortable working with large statistical datasets and spreadsheets, and with online databases. You have experience using Microsoft Office programs (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), and are especially comfortable working in Excel and developing Excel-based tools and resources.

Experience with SPSS software, and with writing database queries would be an asset.


You have excellent communication skills (verbal and written) and can explain complex statistical information in an accessible manner. You have experience designing and delivering presentations to a variety of audiences. You have excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills, and consistently maintain a respectful, professional, and courteous disposition with colleagues and clients. You bring a high level of attention to detail with the ability to synthesize information. You enjoy digging into research and data to solve problems and answer questions.


We will assess the above qualifications using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.
