Metrolinx is connecting communities across the Greater Golden Horseshoe. Metrolinx operates GO Transit and UP Express, as well as the PRESTO fare payment system. We are also building new and improved rapid transit, including GO Expansion, Light Rail Transit routes, and major expansions to Toronto’s subway system, to get people where they need to go, better, faster and easier. The Translation Services Coordinator supports organizational compliance with the French Language Services Act under the supervision of the Manager, Corporate Communications, through engagement with internal stakeholders, coordination of corporate translation and quality control of materials published in French.
What will I be doing?
- Administering French Language Services activities for Metrolinx, including monitoring translation requests by internal stakeholders and coordinating vendor translation services according to timelines specified in service level agreements
- Providing expert adaptation, editing, proofreading, harmonization, digital validation and final signoff of Metrolinx’s public-facing French materials. This includes marketing materials, blog posts, construction notices, web and social media content, newsletters, print and recorded announcements and major publications (e.g., Board meeting materials, reports)
- Supporting efforts to ensure and improve Metrolinx’s compliance with the French Language Services Act, and developing awareness of the organization’s requirements under the FLS Act
- Reviewing, researching, assessing and adjusting the work of French translation agencies and translating text as required, ensuring that all aspects of style, grammar, spelling, tone, consistency, interpretation, terminology and content accuracy are maintained at the highest level of excellence as per established editorial standards and legislated requirements
- Reviewing and editing translated content before providing approval to ensure consistency over multi platforms –construction notices, reports, blog posts, digital copy (websites, mobile apps, social media), advertising, signage, mobile messages (Alerts on the GO), surveys, and email newsletters
- Proofreading, reviewing, editing and approving a large volume of designed/creative material in digital or print format
- Developing reference material to ensure the use of accurate French terminology (lexicon, guide)
- Assisting in forecasting translation budgets and evaluating quality of translation providers. Supporting execution of established policies and standards for French Language Services
- Ensuring accuracy of translation vendor invoices
What Skills and Qualifications Do I Need?
- Excellent knowledge of the English language and professional communication normally attained through completion of a post-secondary degree or diploma plus completion of a post-secondary Certificate in Advanced Level French Language Proficiency, or an equivalent combination of skill, education, training and experience
- Minimum two (2) years’ experience with English-to-French translation and translation vendor coordination. Superior written and oral French skills, and superior French proofreading skills. Experience in translation within the transportation industry is an asset.
- Superior interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills, including the ability to liaise effectively with all levels of staff, vendors/contractors, and other stakeholders.
- Good organizational, research, planning and project management skills
- Advanced knowledge of Adobe Acrobat to markup pdfs
- Reference and guidance provided by Metrolinx objectives, policies, procedures, and regulations. Reference also provided by the Ontario French Language Services Act
- Judgement is required in ensuring that information communicated internally and externally, including communications on behalf of senior management, accurately reflects corporate policies. Judgement is used to ensure that copyright laws governing symbols, designs, and written or visual material used in Metrolinx print, on-line or display material are adhered to. Judgement is used to ensure that the content of print, on-line or display matter is accurate
- Regular exposure to highly confidential and often contentious information being prepared for public release
- Normal office environment with some remote work. Mental stress involved in fielding questions from and providing advice to staff from all areas of the organization, meeting deadlines and managing several projects simultaneously. Frequent prolonged computer and mobile device use
- Frequent contact with translation vendor representatives. Occasional contact with FLS stakeholders including representatives from the Ontario Ombudsman’s Office and the Ministry of Francophone Affairs
