Hart House is a tri-campus centre for student and community engagement at the University of Toronto. Hart House is both a historic 200,000 square foot heritage building located on the St. George campus, and the provider on all three UofT campuses of innovative, student-focused programming that promotes the arts, dialogue, wellness, and community engagement. As the vibrant home for the education of mind, body and spirit, Hart House provides a broad spectrum of social, cultural, athletic and academic activities and, as a leader in experiential and co-curricular learning, plays a vital role in the education of students beyond the classroom. It has a strong tradition of creativity, diversity, innovation and fellowship.


Reporting to the Vice-Provost Students, the Warden is the Chief Executive Officer of Hart House. The incumbent leads and directs the House’s strategic outreach to and relationships with stakeholders across UofT’s St. George, Scarborough and Mississauga campuses, as well as in the broader community where appropriate, in the formulation, understanding and pursuit of a coherent strategic vision, creates and socializes multi-year strategic plans for the House, oversees their ongoing implementation, and establishes and operationalizes a consistent framework for assessing the realization of the plans’ goals and objectives.


The Warden oversees all aspects of Hart House co-curricular programs and experiential opportunities for students that are delivered either virtually or in person across all three UofT campuses, including those created and developed by staff and those created and developed by student-led Committees and clubs of Hart House.


The Warden also oversees all of the services and spaces pertaining to Hart House, including two public information desks, including the “HUB”; the Hart House Fitness Centre and pool; program and performance areas including the 450-seat Hart House Theatre; the Justina M. Barnicke Gallery at Hart House, a founding gallery of the federated Art Museum of the University of Toronto (AMUT); a 150-acre farm in Caledon, Ontario; two restaurants; and a thriving hospitality, event management and food and beverage catering business that delivers services in multiple event spaces both within and outside Hart House, and that produces and hosts a range of both in-person and virtual meetings, conferences, weddings, and more.


The Warden also oversees all aspects of Hart House governance, annual business and operational planning, financial management and revenue generation, advancement (including both fundraising and alumni engagement), medium and long-term capital planning, facilities management, marketing and communications, community relations, and human resources (including professional development) for an overall team of over 400 employees.


The Warden works closely with the University’s Student Life Division, Deans of Student Experience & Wellbeing and other student affairs professionals at UTSC and UTM, Deans of Students at University and federated colleges, student leaders and student unions on all three campuses, the Division of Operations and Real Estate Partnerships, the Division of People Strategy, Equity and Culture, University of Toronto Sport & Recreation, various academic departments and others across the University and in the broader community to foster collaboration, enhance operational effectiveness, communicate effectively to communities of interest and provide mutual support. The Warden represents the interests of Hart House within the context of University governance and in relation to other University stakeholders, alumni, and external communities.


Essential Qualifications:

(MINIMUM)


EDUCATION:


Graduate university degree in a relevant area.


EXPERIENCE:


Minimum 10 years’ experience in a post-secondary, arts and culture, recreation and wellness, non-profit or related environment. Demonstrated knowledge of student learning and development theory and practice. Proven oversight and strategic leadership in the operation of a complex facility that is self-funded through revenue generation. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and inspire a wide variety of individual and groups. Must be able to liaise between the House and its constituents. Demonstrated leadership working with diverse groups, and strong understanding of equity and inclusion pedagogy and practice. Familiarity with arts or arts administration or a demonstrated appreciation and familiarity with these areas, is preferred. Previous leadership experience in fundraising activities. Experience in developing strategic directions for a complex organization and effectively assessing progress to goals.
