Applications are invited for a full-time academic hematopathologist in the Hamilton Regional Laboratory Medicine Program (HRLMP), with an academic appointment at an appropriate rank in the Department of Pathology and Molecular Medicine at McMaster University, Hamilton. The start date will be March 1, 2023, or as mutually agreed upon.
The ideal candidate for this role is a motivated and collegial physician, with a strong sense of professionalism and excellent communication skills. The candidate is required to have certification in hematological pathology OR certification in anatomical/general pathology with fellowship training in hematopathology from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or its equivalent. The candidate must currently hold or be eligible for medical licensure in the Province of Ontario. The position requires a high level of diagnostic skill in bone marrow aspirate and biopsy interpretation, as well as flow cytometry interpretation and molecular testing. Skill in lymph node biopsy interpretation is an asset. The HRLMP will consider both applicants who have experience in hematological pathology at a tertiary care centre, or those who are new graduates.
About this role
The successful candidate will join HRLMP’s Discipline of Anatomical Pathology, which includes 33 anatomical pathologists across all subspecialties, including hematopathology; and will work closely with laboratory hematologists in the Discipline of Laboratory Hematology. Their work will be supported by Managers in Laboratory Hematology and Anatomical Pathology who oversee administrative operations, Technical Specialists, and a diverse group of technical staff.
The successful candidate will be asked to collaborate in the implementation of the HRLMP’s strategic plan, contribute to local and regional education events, and actively engage in their own continuing medical education. They will be expected to participate in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. Specifically, alongside other HRLMP professional and technical staff, they will be expected to engage with McMaster’s MD Program and with McMaster’s Royal College Accredited Programs in Anatomical Pathology, General Pathology, Adult Hematology, and Pediatric Hematology/Oncology. A commitment to academic scholarship is desirable; the HRLMP and the Department of Pathology and Molecular Medicine value scholarly interests in the areas of education, quality improvement, knowledge translation, innovation, and/or clinical and translational research.

Compensation for this role will align with the Province of Ontario’s Laboratory Medicine Funding Framework Agreement (LMFFA). The 2022/23 LMFFA Agreement provides for a sum of $374,876.55 per annum in salary and benefits for Pathologists in Ontario who hold a 1.0 full time equivalent (FTE) appointment. The intent is for the successful candidate to hold a 1.0 FTE appointment in the HRLMP.
