Job Description:
HEALTH, SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENTAL (HSE) COORDINATOR

This position is well suited to those individuals who have a keen interest in occupational health and safety and have practical experience in the construction industry. This individual works under the supervision of the Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) Manager in the HSE department. They are responsible for assisting with the ongoing development, maintenance, and implementation of the Tom Jones Corporation (TJC) Health and Safety Management System (HSMS).

Work Duties
The HSE Coordinator splits their time between the office and the field depending on the HSE Department’s priorities at the time. The duties listed below are meant to provide a general idea of what may be expected.

Office Duties Include:

  • Delivering the company’s General Orientation Program to new hires.
  • Maintaining a current working knowledge of Ontario’s Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and all applicable regulations.
  • Participating in Pre-Job Planning Meetings as required.
  • Assisting with Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) claims management.
  • Providing guidance and leadership to all staff in maintaining the company’s Certificate of

Recognition (COR™) certification.

  • Development and implementation of safety policies and programs by reviewing work areas, equipment, processes, and work activities.
  • Assist in the sorting, organization and filing of HSE department records (both physical and electronic).
  • Coordinate inspections, investigations, and occupational safety activities with other departments within the company.
  • Collect and review incident data, identifying the needs for new or modified programs.
  • Research occupational safety information to assure the best available methods and equipment are adopted to minimize the hazards in the workplace.
  • Assisting in the review and/or creation of Safe Job Procedures (SJPs), Safe Work Practices (SWPs) and Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) in compliance with industry standards and federal, provincial and client requirements.
  • Researching, planning, organizing, and delivering presentations/reports for Tom Jones

Corporation staff on various health and safety related topics.

  • Assisting with the timely completion of incident reports.

Field Duties Include:

  • Conducting regular jobsite inspections to ensure compliance with the OHSA & Regulations, the

TJC HSMS, the client’s health and safety program, and the COR™ standard.

  • Reviewing Field Level Risk Assessments (FLRAs).
  • Monitoring adherence to the company HSMS and provincial legislation by all employees and subcontractors.
  • Serve as a role model and lead by example by coaching workers in industry best practices and holding demonstrations when necessary.
  • Presenting new policies, procedures, and programs to field workers.
  • Providing guidance to field personnel by delivering Toolbox Talks.
  • Setting up jobsite trailers with Safety Boards and required paperwork.
  • Coordinate and/or conduct occupational health and safety training for various workgroups, to meet provincial, and federal OHSA requirements.
  • Act as a liaison between the office and the field.

Essential Skills and Credentials

  • High School Diploma.
  • Valid Ontario driver’s license.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Ontario’s Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulation for Construction Projects and Workplace Safety and Insurance Act.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Strong English communication skills (both verbal and written).
  • Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power Point, & Outlook). Proficiency is considered an asset, while a working knowledge is considered a requirement.
  • Strong public speaker.
  • Ability to work alone effectively and prioritize critical tasks.
  • Must be a highly motivated, service and team-oriented individual with an acute attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of concrete formwork, demolition, and heavy civil work is considered an asset.
  • Enthusiasm for challenges and new initiatives are prerequisites.
  • Industry specific training certifications are considered an asset.
  • Industry specific certifications (NCSO, GSC, etc.) are preferred, while any occupational health and safety certifications are considered acceptable (CRSP, etc.).

Miscellaneous

  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to travel and stay overnight when required.
  • Ability to work overtime as necessary.
