Laboratory Assistant

This opportunity participates in the short and long-term deliverables of the Double Haploid and Seed Quality Analysis Laboratories through the use of cutting-edge research equipment, methodology and materials to support the decision-making process of the Canola Breeding Pipeline, while in compliance with quality and safety standards.

This is a permanent position at the Winnipeg, Manitoba, Smart Park location.

What you will do:

• Assist in preparation of media, microspore cultures, embryo count and dilutions, embryo desiccation and transfer, tissue sampling and ploidy analysis.
• Receive, sort, clean and scan seed samples
• Prepare and analyze samples using NIR, GC and flow cytometry
• Maintenance and calibration of laboratory equipment
• Maintenance and organization of seed inventory and other research records
• Uses aseptic technique
• Actively participate in process improvement initiatives
• Follow all Quality Management System (QMS) and Health Safety and Environment (HSE) procedures and promote implementation within the QA and DH programs
• Maintain tidiness & orderliness within the workplace
• Participate in task-related document creation and process review for job-related activities
• Assist in other projects & performs other duties as required

WHO YOU ARE:

• Degree or diploma in agricultural/biological science or related field is required
• Experience with NIR and GC analysis and instrumentation is required
• Strong computer software literacy, with experience using Microsoft Office, including writing and maintaining macros is required (SharePoint and Teams experience is an asset)
• Ability and willingness to lift up to 25 lbs is required
• Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary/multicultural research team is required
• Highly motivated, results oriented, with the ability to work with people individually or in a team to gain commitment to achieve those results is required
• Possess strong ability to work accurately and pay attention to detail is required
• Strong organization skills and ability to prioritize daily tasks is required
• Flexible attitude and ability to learn new procedures is required
• Ability to communicate complex ideas in a clear, concise, and actionable manner is required
• Strong problem solving and critical thinking skills is required
• Aseptic technique is an asset
