Job Summary

The Senior Manager, Corporate Sustainability Reporting & Disclosure is responsible for developing and overseeing the ESG reporting and Disclosure strategy, ensuring a robust and compliant production of corporate reports and CN’s ESG reporting & disclosure process. The incumbent also provides thought leadership, supports and collaborates with key internal stakeholders on all aspect of ESG reporting and disclosure best practices and regulatory requirements and trends, as well as identifying and pursuing opportunities to implement new systems and processes to increase CN’s efficiency. Finally, the Senior Manager, Corporate Sustainability Reporting & Disclosure develops and maintains a cross-function engagement as well as internal and external stakeholder partnerships in order to contribute to CN’s sustainability strategy and to ensure its reputational risk management by adhering to the highest governance standards.

Main Responsibilities

Regulatory and Reputational Risk Management 55%

  • Lead CN’s sustainability disclosure strategy and reporting activities, including communication plan for effective engagement of key stakeholders
  • Develop and gain internal agreement on long-term reporting and disclosure roadmap to support leaders and Board in strategic decision-making around CN’s reputational risk management
  • Lead the transition towards integrated financial and ESG reporting, working closely with the Financial Reporting team
  • Lead the development and maintenance of data systems and maintain indicator protocols to ensure data consistency.
  • Identify risks, gaps, pain points, barriers and opportunities with CN’s regulatory and reputational risk management
  • Corporate Subject Matter Expert on sustainability reporting & disclosure, including measurement, disclosure requirements, standards, framework and industry trends and legislations
  • Lead and report progress on TCFD, SBTI, CDP, SASB, and other disclosure, performance and rating initiatives,
  • Lead process for awards submissions


Internal and External Stakeholder Collaboration (25%)

  • Works cross-functionally with key internal stakeholders within operations (e.g., mechanical function, transportation, fuel optimization, fleet managers, facilities management), with strategy partners (e.g. IT, strategy, procurement, finance) and with operational subsidiaries (e.g. CNTL, TransX, Great Lakes Vessel Fleet) to lead the planning and execution of annual ESG due diligence and disclosure processes
  • Ensure a robust cross-functions collection and management of ESG data
  • Collaborates with internal and external stakeholders to co-create and execute CN’s ESG reporting and Disclosure roadmap (e.g., governments, RAC, AAR, trucking sector, ports and shipping sector, OEMs, clean technology companies, industry peers, suppliers and vendors, fuel producers/suppliers, etc.)


Governance (20%)

  • Manage CN's client and investors data requests on ESG disclosure-related matters.
  • Establish, in collaboration with key stakeholders, key ESG metrics and documentation protocols in support of building governance and controls
  • Understand risks inherent to ESG Reporting and Disclosure activities and ensure effective controls are in place
  • Develop and review methodologies, management systems and procedures to track, monitor and assess the viability or success of ESG initiatives
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of legislative and ESG regulation in both Canada and the US - Ensure CN’s disclosure & reporting operations are compliant with applicable laws
  • Research relevant disclosure framework and ESG regulations
  • Ensure data consistency and preparing for audit

Working Conditions

The role has standard working conditions in an office environment with a regular workweek from Monday to Friday. Due to the nature of the role, the incumbent must be able to meet tight deadlines, handle pressure, and stress. The role requires travel (10%) within Canada and the U.S.

Requirements

Experience

  • 5-10 years of progressive experience leading and executing corporate ESG reporting and disclosure initiatives, preferably in the railroad or supply chain industry
  • Experience proposing, initiating and managing cross-functional internal and external partnerships and collaborations and building strong, mutually beneficial stakeholder relationships
  • Expert level understanding of the TCFD, SBTI, CDP, SASB and other sustainability reporting framework
  • Experience with key ESG performance indicators
  • A mix of government relations, marketing and sales, public affairs, operations, facilities, procurement, risk management, finance, accounting and investor relations experience is desirable


Education/Certification/Designation

  • Bachelor degree in Business Management, Sustainability Management or equivalent
  • Master degree in Management (MBA) or Sustainability an asset
